Porosnusantaranews,BALIKPAPAN – Pemanfaatan gas metana dari Tempat Pemrosesan Akhir (TPA) Sampah Manggar, Balikpapan Timur, masih menghadapi sejumlah tantangan. Produksi gas yang bersumber dari penguraian sampah organik di landfill bersifat fluktuatif dan belum bisa dikendalikan secara optimal.

Kepala UPTD TPA Manggar Muhammad Haryanto menjelaskan, gas metana dihasilkan dari proses pembusukan alami sampah organik yang tertimbun di landfill. Gas tersebut kemudian ditangkap dan disalurkan ke rumah-rumah warga di sekitar TPA.

“Gas metana itu berasal dari landfill, tempat penimbunan sampah. Sampah organik yang terurai secara alami menghasilkan gas, lalu kita tangkap dan salurkan ke masyarakat,” ujarnya kepada wartawan, pada Rabu (31/12/2025).



Namun, Haryanto mengakui pihaknya belum mampu melakukan intervensi untuk meningkatkan maupun mengontrol produksi gas. Akibatnya, pasokan gas ke warga kerap tidak stabil, bahkan terkadang hilang sama sekali.

“Kami tidak menutup mata, kadang volume gas yang sampai ke masyarakat kecil, bahkan mati. Itu salah satu tantangan kami,” katanya.

Produksi gas metana yang tidak menentu dipengaruhi banyak faktor. Mulai dari jumlah dan komposisi sampah organik, hingga kondisi cuaca seperti panas dan hujan yang berpengaruh pada kecepatan penguraian sampah.

“Bisa karena sampah organiknya sedikit, bisa juga karena cuaca. Semua itu membuat produksi gas naik turun dan sampai sekarang belum bisa kami kendalikan secara optimal,” jelasnya.

Dalam upaya mengatasi persoalan tersebut, UPTD TPA Manggar terus melakukan berbagai langkah antisipasi, termasuk mencari sumber-sumber gas baru dari pipa ventilasi di area landfill.

Petugas lapangan secara rutin melakukan observasi untuk memastikan titik-titik yang masih menghasilkan gas. “Kalau memang tidak ada gasnya, mau dicari ke mana pun tetap tidak dapat. Itu kendala utama,” ujarnya.

Menurut Haryanto, solusi ideal sebenarnya adalah membangun reaktor atau tempat khusus penguraian sampah organik seperti instalasi biogas tertutup. Dengan sistem tersebut, sumber dan jumlah bahan baku dapat dikontrol sehingga produksi gas lebih stabil.

Namun, pembangunan fasilitas semacam itu membutuhkan anggaran besar dan dinilai belum layak secara ekonomi. “Apalagi gas ini dibagikan gratis ke warga, hanya ditarik iuran pengelolaan dari kelompok swadaya masyarakat. Secara bisnis memang belum visible,” katanya.

Saat ini, tercatat sekitar 380 sambungan rumah yang terhubung dengan jaringan gas metana TPA Manggar. Namun, berdasarkan informasi dari kelompok pengelola, tidak semua sambungan aktif. Bahkan, hanya sebagian kecil rumah yang masih mendapatkan aliran gas secara kontinu.

Pemanfaatan gas metana di TPA Manggar sendiri mulai berkembang sejak 2018, setelah mendapat dukungan program corporate social responsibility (CSR) dari Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM). (mto)
